7. Avoid Herbal tea to ensure the development of your baby in the first trimester

Some experts say it is best avoided in pregnancy, especially in the first trimester. If you choose to drink it, stick to no more than one cup a day for no longer than six weeks at a time. As with any herbal tea, don’t drink it continually throughout your pregnancy. Herbs that contain stimulants or caffeine-containing supplements, especially those that are intended to promote weight loss, guarana, kola nut, betel (Piper betle), Citrum aurantium, yohimbe, theobromine (cocoa extract), Garcinai cambogia. Other botanicals to avoid while pregnant include golden seal, Cascara sagrada, black walnut, wormwood, tansy, pennyroyal, senna, saw palmetto, pao d’arco, MacKay says.

6. Don’t eat raw meat/seafood during first trimester

It’s best not to eat undercooked or raw meat during pregnancy, as it may make you ill and could even harm your baby.

You may become infected with the toxoplasma parasite if you eat meat that is raw or pink and bloody in the middle. This can lead to toxoplasmosis, which causes a flu-like illness that develops several weeks after you’ve become infected.

Toxoplasmosis is a fairly mild illness for you, but it can harm your baby and cause serious health problems. It can even lead to miscarriage, or the loss of a baby at birth.

Undercooked meat can also carry a risk of food poisoning caused by salmonella bacteria. When you are pregnant, your immune system changes so that its main purpose is to protect your developing baby. This makes you more susceptible to food poisoning than you were before you were pregnant.

5. Stop eating Soft Cheese during your first trimester

Soft cheeses can contain listeria bacteria that cause an infection called listeriosis. To avoid this risk, pregnant women are advised to not eat mould-ripened soft cheese such as brie, camembert, mould-ripened soft cheese made with goats’ milk, and others with a similar rind. You should also avoid soft blue-veined cheeses, including: Danish blue, gorgonzola and roquefort. Soft cheeses like this are less acidic than hard cheeses and they contain more moisture. This means they can be an ideal environment for harmful bacteria, such as listeria, to grow in.

4. Don’t consume Pate during your first trimester

It’s not safe to eat any type of pate while you’re pregnant, and this includes vegetable pate.

All pate, whether it’s made from meat, fish or vegetables, may contain higher levels of listeria bacteria than other foods. In pregnancy, you’re much more susceptible to listeriosis, a type of food poisoning that’s caused by eating food contaminated with listeria bacteria. This is because your body’s natural defences against the listeria bacteria are weaker during pregnancy.

Listeriosis can cause mild, flu-like symptoms that can appear anything from several days to several months after you’ve been exposed to the bacteria.

Even though it’s usually a fairly mild illness, it may harm your unborn baby. Listeriosis can cause miscarriage, premature birth, and even the loss of a baby at birth. If you develop listeriosis during the last few weeks of pregnancy, your baby may be very ill.

3. Avoid raw eggs while pregnant

Raw eggs or any foods that contain raw eggs should be avoided because of the potential exposure to salmonella. Some homemade Caesar dressings, mayonnaise, homemade ice cream or custards, and Hollandaise sauces may be made with raw eggs.

If the recipe is cooked at some point, this will reduce the exposure to salmonella. Commercially manufactured ice cream, dressings, and eggnog are made with pasteurized eggs and do not increase the risk of salmonella. Restaurants should be using pasteurized eggs in any recipe that is made with raw eggs, such as Hollandaise sauce or dressings.

Vegetables are safe to eat, so you still need to eat them. However, it is essential to make sure they are washed to avoid potential exposure to toxoplasmosis. Toxoplasmosis may contaminate the soil where the vegetables were grown.

Seafood can be a great source of protein, and the omega-3 fatty acids in many fish can promote your baby’s brain and eye development. However, some fish and shellfish contain potentially dangerous levels of mercury. Too much mercury could harm your baby’s developing nervous system.
